MY HEART AND MY HOME ARE IN NEWBURGH

Candidate Bio

Alonzo has been a resident of Newburgh (68 years) all his life. His family has lived in Newburgh since 1863, when his great-grandfather; Frank Foldon, moved there as a runaway slave at the age of 15. His mother was born in Newburgh in 1900 and his father came to Newburgh in 1915. Alonzo is one of five children, three of whom are still living, including two sisters in Boston, MA.

Councilman Moore has four children. He has two daughters who are graduates of the University of Evansville and still live and work in Evansville. He also has a daughter that lives in Austin, TX, who is a deputy sheriff and his son, who is also a Warrick County resident, lives in Tennyson and works in Evansville in the cellular phone industry.

Alonzo and his wife Shirley have been married for 15 years and together have 9 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He attended the Jefferson Street Colored School from the first through eighth grade then Lincoln High School in Evansville, before graduating in 1958 from Newburgh High School. Mr. Moore has taken classes at the University of Evansville in photography, real estate sales, art and calligraphy.

His first job while still in school was cooking breakfast for Mrs. Marie George-Sonntagg, who owned the Sonntagg Hotel in Evansville. Also while still in high school he worked for Dr. Rogers cleaning his office, sharpening and sterilizing needles and trimming and filing x-rays.

Alonzo retired from Alcoa after 34 years, working in the Facilities Maintenance Department. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Local 104 and is also a graduate of the AFL-CIO sponsored Union Counselor Program.

Some of Mr. Moore's hobbies include photography, collecting teapots, monkeys and playing the organ.

Before being elected to the Newburgh Town Council he served as a member of the Newburgh Volunteer Fire Department and has worked as a volunteer for the Newburgh Fiddler Festival and the Newburgh Wine & Art Festival. Mr. Moore has also served on the Newburgh Parks & Recreation Board as a board member and  was the park commissioner. He was a member of the Newburgh Jaycees and during his time he served as State Director, Secretary, External Vice-President, and President of the local chapter, and as Region 7 Vice-President for the Indiana State Jaycees.

Councilman Moore is a member of SOAR, The AFL-CIO's A. Philip Randolph Institute, and Historic Newburgh Inc.

Alonzo is a member of the Warrick County Democratic Central Committee and is also on its Executive Board serving as the District 6 Representative. He is also the Precinct Committeeman for precinct 22 in Ohio Township.

For the past 25 years he has worked with The A. Philip Randolph Institute in Voter registration and Get Out the Vote efforts, traveling from Las Vegas to Washington, D.C. and from Chicago to Orlando, and several cities in between.

Goals

Alonzo wishes to see Newburgh become the kind of town where people from other places look upon us as a small town where they would love to live and raise their families. Not just for the beautiful view of the river, but for all of the other things the town has to offer. The historic buildings, the best schools and teaching staff in the tri-state, summer and winter sports, great parks, the best police and fire protection, and most of all the content of the character of the citizens of his town.

He would like to see the population of Newburgh become more diversified as for minorities living here and them becoming more involved in what Newburgh has to offer.

He would also like to see more of the citizens of Newburgh attend the open meetings at the town hall and personally become more involved and he would like to have every citizen in Newburgh registered to vote and then take advantage of that opportunity.

Additionally Councilman Moore would like to see greater participation by the local business owners at the meetings as well.

Due to his extensive involvement with the parks he would like to see more work done on the buildings at the Old Lock & Dam Park as the Town has been trying to improve them but he feels that more still needs to be done in this area.

Mr. Moore will also work for additional improvements on our streets for those who both drive and walk in Newburgh. To this end he would also like to see the Rivertown Trail started and completed during his tenure on the council. Alonzo will continue to work on the implementation of the Safe Ways To School (sidewalk) Program started earlier this year for the safety of our children.

He feels very fortunate to have been serving on the Newburgh Town Council when the committees started and finished the work on the Old Town Hall (Ebenezer Hall) and the (IHOP)- Indian Hill Overlook Park.

Alonzo also feels that the Town needs to consider annexation to be able to provide more and better coordinated services to the residents of the Newburgh community.

There are other issues that need to be considered for the improvement of our fire protection in and around Newburgh, such as obtaining a grant to help pay for a badly needed new fire truck with little or no cost to the town of Newburgh

Because this is his home he has always loved Newburgh and has always worked as a team player to improve the area. He has thoroughly enjoyed working with the members of the town council, the town manager and all of the employees that he has had contact.

Alonzo is always available to serve and provide the commitment and leadership that the people of Newburgh deserve, but he rightfully believes that no one person has all of the right answers!
