She also volunteers with Warrick County Habitat for Humanity, Studio Bee, Evansville Rescue Mission and Warrick County Red Cross.  She is also on the Boonville Band Sponsors, Inc. Board.

Dawnya has significant jury trial experience in both Vanderburgh and Warrick Counties and as a deputy prosecutor, she gained valuable experience assessing case files and working with law enforcement in search warrants and filing charges.  She has acted as liaison between the executive and legislative branches of government in senior management with Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

Experience

Dawnya has also managed in both government and private business.  She spent 3 years at Indiana State Personnel Department advising and training state agency leadership on managing their workforce and 1 and one half years as Director of Human Resources with Indiana Department of Environmental Management, managing a staff of 16 and advising agency leadership on management matters  She also spent 2 years as Vice President of Human Resources at Hirons & Co. advertising agency.

Goals

Dawnya feels very strong about the passion, integrity and accountability she will bring to the Warrick County Prosecutors Office.

PASSION

It is her belief that in order to truly represent the citizens of Warrick County, one must have a passion that is unwavering. Her passion comes from her roots here in our community, as well as her commitment to the future of our community.  As a Warrick County native, she cares deeply about the families who reside here, their safety, and their confidence that the judicial system is doing everything possible to keep criminals off our streets and away from our homes.  Dawnya wants Warrick County to be a community where her children will want to raise their families as well.

INTEGRITY

Integrity is the hallmark of a good leader.  Making tough decisions, and then standing by them, should be the standard for our public officials. One indicator of the current administration’s lack of leadership is that over 80 individuals have been fired or forced to resign in the last 16 years.  Credibility and forthrightness in dealing with law enforcement, local government, the Courts and the public are paramount to effectively leading as Prosecutor.  Dawnya plans to establish a cooperative effort among all local law enforcement elements to create synergy amongst those responsible for the well-being of our community.

ACCOUNTABILITY

We have gone far too long with status quo in the Prosecutor's office.  This lackluster effort has resulted in a conviction rate of less than 50%, decreased cooperation among law enforcement, little participation in drug and alcohol prevention initiatives, and refusals to communicate with defense counsel causing delays and inefficiencies in the criminal justice system.  Child molesting and other serious cases are commonly dismissed without input from victims or law enforcement.  Court rulings have forced dismissal of cases due to this administration’s refusal to follow Court orders (State of Indiana v. Schmitt).

As a matter of policy, crimes such as invasion of privacy (violation of a protective order) are no longer prosecuted unless accompanied by another crime.  As your Prosecutor Dawnya will be a Prosecutor that serves as an advocate for the citizens of Warrick County in the criminal justice system, and one that serves the public interest of protecting and safeguarding our community.
