Bio
County Councilman Mike Goebel is
a lifelong resident of Vanderburgh County and a teacher at Mater Dei
High School. One of Indiana’s most successful high school
football and wrestling coaches, while holding a full time night
shift job, he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies from
the University of Southern Indiana in 1974 and a Master's degree in
History in 1978 from Indiana State University. His daughter,
Mackenzie, attends Indiana University's Kelly School of Business and
his son, Zachary, attends Murray State University. Mike was
elected to one of three at-large seats on the County Council in
2004.
Mike leadership abilities are widely
known. As a coach he has won Indiana State Championships in both
football as well as 12 times in wrestling including a stretch of nine
consecutive years from 1995-2003.
He has also won "Coach of the Year"
honors in both football and basketball, but his awards and accolades do
not stop there. Mike was awarded an Indiana Fitness Award by
Senator Lugar, the Citizen of the Year Award by the Westside Civitan
Club, the Spirit Award by the Tri-State Multiple Sclerosis Society, as
well as being the recipient of a Scholarship from the Fulbright United
States Scholar Committee.
He has always loved his community and
is proud to call Vanderburgh County and Southern Indiana home.
Goals
Councilman Goebel continues to be
open to all of his constituents concerns and suggestions and during his
time on the council he has lead with vision and passion, the way he
treats every aspect of his life.
In addition to his coaching
activities, he truly enjoys teaching government classes at Mater Dei
High School, where he served as Social Studies Chairman for 17 years.
As an educator, he feels strongly that all the levels of government,
federal, state, county and city, should partner with one another to
support the continued growth, development and enrichment of each and
every level of our educational systems. Through this continued
commitment our community and all of the state of Indiana will benefit by
attracting new business as well as retaining and inviting new residents.
With the long-awaited construction of I-69 now underway, Southern
Indiana must take progressive steps to ensure that long-term development
meets the interests of the community, while providing sound economic
growth with good paying jobs, without overlooking the need to protect
our fragile environment. These infrastructure improvements must
allow our residents to travel both safely and efficiently throughout our
communities.
Our government, especially in these difficult economic times, must
protect the taxpayers from unnecessary expenditures while providing the
best services possible.
Having served on the County Council,
Mike understands how the system works. His votes have always been
cast with the best interests of the Vanderburgh County taxpayers in mind
and when he is elected to the State Legislature he will continue to
provide a strong and stable voice for all the residents he represents.
- Please vote for me, Mike Goebel, in
the general election on November 2, 2010.
