Candidate Bio
- James "Pete" Rapp was born in
Spencer County and has been a life-long resident of Southwest
Indiana. He graduated from South Spencer High School and then moved
to Knox County when he attended Vincennes University studying
Architectural Drafting. He then lived in Vanderburgh County while a
student at the University of Southern Indiana where he majored in
English, before he returned to Spencer County.
Pete worked for Guardian Industry until becoming self employed in
the early 1990's. He currently lives in Luce Township with his wife
Susan, who he married in 1989, where he serves as the Luce Township
Trustee. They have a 14 year old son and a 10 year old daughter. The
Rapp family attend the Richland United Methodist Church.
He was first elected Luce Township Trustee in 2002 and since has
obtained his Department of Local Government Finance, Level I
Assessor-Appraiser Certification, which focuses on appraising
residential property and his Level II Assessor-Appraiser
Certification which centers on business appraisals. To achieve Level
II certification you must complete comprehensive real estate
appraisal, accounting, and property tax law classes. Level II is the
highest certification awarded by the State of Indiana and meets the
requirement for performance as a county or township assessor.
In addition to his public service role as trustee, he also serves on
the Spencer County Board of Planning and sits on the Spencer County
Property Appeals Board.
Pete also has a long and varied history of public and community
service including serving as a volunteer firefighter for the Luce
Township Fire Department. In addition he has served the department
as an Instructor, Captain and President. He also trained and served
as an Emergency Medical Technician for the Spencer County Emergency
Medical Services.
Rapp has been a member of the Richland Lions Club and served on its
Board of Directors, including the position of Board President. Other
involvement includes the South Spencer Youth League where he
volunteers as a member of their Board.
Goals
- Pete
understands the challenges facing working families in Southwest
Indiana, and if elected will tirelessly represent those families
needs in Indianapolis.
Rapp believes that the General Assembly must do more to provide
meaningful and lasting property tax relief for Hoosier homeowners.
He also wants to focus on furthering economic development in
Southwest Indiana.
The creation of high-paying jobs with quality benefits will be a top
priority and it is simply not right for families to be living on the
minimum wage with little to no access to affordable healthcare.
Pete is tired of seeing schools in Southwest Indiana continue to
lose their funding to the big schools in Indianapolis. He also
believes that there is no greater investment we can make than in our
children’s education.
Pete feels that the most important thing an elected official can do
is to listen and make sure the voices of the people he represents
are being heard in Indianapolis.
