Shari Sherman has been a resident
of Newburgh for over 22 years. Married to her husband Byron
for 36 years, together they have raised two daughters, now grown and
married with families of their own. The joy of grandchildren x
5 is a delight. She is a member St. John’s Catholic Church,
Newburgh. She attended Vincennes University, St. Mary of the Woods
College, and the University of Southern Indiana, where she has
undertaken numerous professional and adult continuing education
classes.
During Shari’s past term on the
Newburgh Council the town has make improvements including renovating
the old Library into a Town Hall which has enable the citizens to
have a usable government office well into the future and assuring a
Library branch will remain in downtown Newburgh. A federal
grant helped renovate the old town hall, a building on the National
Registry of Historic Places, from a questionable structure into a
beautiful community building used by many individuals and
businesses. Preservation Hall and the upstairs Ebenezer Hall
are assured a long useful life and a source of income for the town.
Through corporative work with the
state, grant dollars have enable the Rivertown Trail to expand with
the first of three phases complete in the fall of 2009, Phase two
going from the Old Lock & Dam Park east to the New Lock & Dam Park
on Hwy 66 is slated to be complete in the fall of 2010.
Sidewalks have been a major
concern for years. Securing grants has enabled sidewalk
upgrades and new walks in the near future making walking in Newburgh
much easier. A goal for Shari is to expand sidewalks to all
areas of Newburgh making the entire community a safe place to walk.
Shari is employed as the Executive
Director for a non-profit organization in Warrick County. She
has over 30 years in social services and is a former small business
owner. She has served on numerous boards over the years,
taking on issues such as domestic violence, serving on the state
Domestic Violence board and food and shelter funding for Warrick
County through FEMA’s Food & Shelter Program. Shari currently
serves as president of the Newburgh Town Council. She is on
the Personnel Committee and serves as Utility Commissioner.
She has served on the Planning Commission and numerous ad hoc
committees for the town.
Shari continues to work for all of
Newburgh, both businesses and individuals. Many of the
improvement to the community have come through a cooperative effort
of the Council members and a commitment to find other resources to
complete needed projects within the town. Keeping a watchful
eye on the finances and leveraging what dollars are available has
enabled the Town to see major improvements while keeping the cost to
the residents as low as possible.
Among Shari’s goals are to
continue to preserve the past history of Newburgh while building a
better community for future generations. She has worked
together with other government initiates on the local, county and
state level to provide Newburgh with a stronger more collective
voice. Shari continually works to provide a good business
environment in Newburgh.
Through her many business and
vocational endeavors she has developed the ability to listen to
people, and she takes those concerns to the council where they are
both heard and represented. Shari has made tough decisions
when needed over the years and is willing to stand up for those who
voice their opinions.
She seeks advice of professionals
when necessary and the input of the citizens of Newburgh at all
times. She continues to work with others to make Newburgh a
great place to call home.
